Oh, and a question.

What does one buy their sister-in-law whom they like but don't know that well?

She's a professional cellist and mum to The Baby's Cousin, who is three months older and looks enough like her to be her brother. (Twin brother.) She has no known hobbies (at least, not known to me, I'm sure she has them) and likes to wear earth tones.

Lacking a better idea, I'm going to putz out and buy her bubble bath and crap. One of you guys has to have a better idea.

Help!

Is a gift card completely out of the question? Maybe one to her favorite sheet-music store? Or Bath & Body Works. Google cello, and see if you can't find some really cutesy musical gifts. Totally something NOT baby-related - you get that part, right? :)

Uh-oh... it' sounds like it's time to kick out with the emergency knitwear... earth-tone scarf, something like that... Either that, or a gift for mommy/baby time... (I don't know...I couldn't think of a b-day gift for my husband this year...)

Hope this doesn't come through twice - BLogger is fucking with me. Anyway, a gift certificate from sharmusic.com might be greatly appreciated. It's the source for sheet music, etc that's recommended by my son's teacher (a professional violist)

Any classical music recording featuring Jacqueline Du Pre, world famous cellist who died far too young. There are also a few books available about her life and the movie "Hilary And Jackie" was about her and her sister, I think it's available on DVD.

Or a pair of Knuck's with "Cello" in duplicate stitch on the fingers. It can be cold rehearsing in those big concert halls.

I can't believe you're not knitting her something - shouldn't that be the first choice?

But yes I agree with the Hilary and Jackie suggestion. the book or the DVD - wonderful, gorgeous film about the famous cellist. Love it so much!

She is getting a scarf - the dark green falling leaves one.

But I wanted to get her something ELSE.

As a former muscian, I totally agree with the Knucks, but if you make black Fetching, she can wear them at concerts, too (and no duplicate stitch, feh!).

I just bought a living gift from Ten Thousand Villages (they exist in the US too, don't they?) for my mother-in-law. I bought livestock donated in her name to a family in a third world country (and an ornament with pigs!). I also got 60 trees to be donated on behalf of my father. It's the first time I've done this so I hope it goes over ok. I like the idea. Definitely something to consider.

dude, elann.com has the coolest purse with musical notes on it. When you go to the site that pattern has been coming up.

I like Athena's idea, too. Sheet music is good.

Trish, who still can't get into her blogger acct

Why don't you ASK her if there's something she'd like? Or ask her mother.
Calendars are interesting -- there's a theme for every possible interest.
Chocolates are appreciated by most people.

Why don't you try a scented candle from Dame Candle Company?

She's a fellow knit-blogger (http://yarnandcatnaps.blogspot.com/index.html) and she's hoping to get enough orders over the holidays to keep the business afloat. I haven't gotten my order yet, so I don't know too much about them, except that the scents come in very unique/creative scents.
