Famous but not weird.

The husbeast's shop has a weekly meeting in which everyone gets together and makes general announcements, including personal stuff and any happy news. One guy announced that he entered his honey in the State Fair and got a second and a couple thirds. The husbeast replied, "Yeah, well my wife got a second in lace knitting." The general response was 'hey, that's cool'.

Ten years ago, the response would have been 'lace knitting? weird'. I'm not sure if that's because I'm older now, or if it's because knitting has become popular. I'm sure I don't want to know.

Even as a not-so-hot knitter, I get a little bit of the respect. Nice that we aren't all little grannies anymore...

I get mostly 'huh. whatever does it for you' comments from the general population. But sometimes I get 'hey, so cool. Can you make something for me?' which, like you say, never used to happen. It's nice.

Did the husbeast explain it was for a doily though? I think, in my world, doilies would be snickered at, no matter the skill level! Such a shame.

Actually, knitting/crocheting gets me more respect as a teacher than 8 years of education and two (self)published novels. I say I write books, and their eyes glaze over--the idea of writing anything longer than their telephone number on a guys hand just freaks them out--but I can MAKE stuff? Their grandmothers do that--and they love grandma, and so it's cool.

It's the knitting, definitely the knitting ;) I once completely stopped a dinner party of frikking astrophysicists with a SOCK. Yes, the power of knitting is awesome.
