Yup. I'm bonkers.

So I was making challa, the egg bread, that's braided? Yeah. And I was rolling out the snakes, and trying to remember how to do a four-strand braid because I hadn't made it in ages. And I remembered someone making a comment on the blog, that I'd said 'lace with beads' and they read it 'lace with bread' and they didn't give it a second thought because, hey, it's me.

Uh. Yeah.

That's a yarnover peeking out between the second and third columns of stitches, so it's knitted bread lace. Officially. After it came out of the oven, I was giving it a try, and asked the husbeast "Would you like some provisional cast-on? Or maybe some selvedge?" He declared it 'tasty', so I guess it turned out fine. None the worse for being made by a lunatic.

He's trying to figure out how to get it into a conversation at work tomorrow - "Yeah, Julie got bored last night and knitted some bread."

Still don't know how to do the four-strand braid.

Fuck it.

It's really easy

you have strand A B C D
A goes over B under C over D
Then you have B C D A
B goes over C under D over A

cont, try it with some thicker yarn you'll see

I forgot to say, that looks yummy and is way cooler than any braided bread

I love baking bread but the idea of knitting it never entered my mind. When i make challah, I start with one snake crossed over the other. Then take the leftmost arm of the snake and braid it over and under and over. Then take the leftmost snake and braid it under and over and under until you've used all the snake. Make sense? Although, I think for presentation, I like the knitted version.

There are several ways to do a four strand braid. Check out WikiHow to see a few examples.

Love, love, love the knitted bread. :)

That is awesome!
It looks like everyone else has already provided a pretty good tutorial on 4-stranded braiding, but maybe this will help: think weaving. Over, under, over, and if you went over last time, go under this time.

Oh, that's just great! Knitted challa.

Is it wrong how very much I want to try this? Especially since I'm generally not a bread making type?

Evil! You are evil! I have to make a huge challah for a bar mitzvah next week. Do you know how much I want to do a "knitted" one?
Evil.

Beautiful... just freaking beautiful...

hmm -- looks like the bread would be delish alone and even better if "laced" with a little maple syrup or honey.

Oh my goodness, I am going to jump on this delicious bandwagon! Homemade bread is so yummy but I rarely have time for it.. I may just have to cut into my knitting time for this one!
