I got the Knitty article turned in with forty-five whole minutes to spare last night; I think I finished up the swatch-blocking and photography at eleven. Usually I have my stuff in early, so hopefully Amy won't decide I'm a total nutcase from this. (Just a partial nutcase... she's read my articles, after all.)
Having gotten all THAT straightened out, I crawled off to bed; the husbeast had already been asleep about an hour when I fell face-down beside him. I'd been there maybe five minutes when the cat hopped up on the bed. She waited for me to lift the covers like I always do, so that she could wriggle under them and snuggle in. Being exhausted, I didn't.
So the cat walked up over me, stood on my back, leaned down so her face was next to my ear, and said "purrpurrpurrMROWFpurrpurr."
I didn't respond, but I was laughing and it was bouncing her up and down, so I figure the damn cat knew I was awake. She tried again. "purrpurrpurrpurrpurrMROWFpurrrrrr".
The husbeast muttered "fucker" in his sleep and rolled over violently, taking the covers with him and nearly knocking the cat over.
She gave up and went to sleep on my feet. My ankles hurt today.
Sekhmet, you fucker.
Now I have to clear out my house, find something for dinner, and run to the store to get shampoo (I'm out) so I can shower, all before the in-laws get here in.... three hours. Shoot me. Shoot me now.

Hey Julie, do you have an opinion about free sock patterns online vs. those in a book? Have you found either to be more reliable or more interesting than the other? (I haven't actualy formed an opinion yet, but I've been shying away from online patterns recently.)

Seeing as my entire lifetime output of socks is four half-finished ones and one pair of plain stockinette footies, I may not be the authority you seek on sock patterns.
That said, I think free patterns on the internet don't always have, shall we say, the quality control editing that they should, so I'd approach some of them with caution. But from reputable sources, the ones on line are as good as anything I've seen in books. (Cookie A's stuff on Knitty is fantastic, and so are a lot of other Knitty sock patterns.)
I have a pushing-forty book-freak remember-the-pre-computer-days bias toward pattern books, but really, some of the patterns on line are just as good.

Going off on the sock thought, I think any of the online patterns that are very popular (Cookie's or Grumperina's Jaywalkers, for ex.) are known to be great, but Nancy Bush is super for giving all the details in her books for making successful socks.

Rae, I have knit a few socks from online patterns. I have been disappointed. I did use a percentage pattern: www.wendyjohnson.net/blog/sockpattern.htm
the pattern works and fits nicely, but does not include side gussets, so on my fat feet they were a tad tight. I tried adding gussets, and now I'm confused (no big surprise there).
However, I did use an art yarns pattern for toe-ups on size 5's that was very successful. The pattern came with the yarn.\\

I wasn't sure where to put this comment, so I'll just put it here... I just wanted to say that I love your cheating at color theory article in last season's Knitty. Very helpful. I'm completely useless when it comes to color coordination, but I think with the tricks in your article, I can manage a bit better. Thanks! :)
Hi! The lace is amazing!! Beautiful stitching and wonderful yarn. Such Color! As for Sekhmet the F, were you laughing because he tickled or because you were so tired anything would be funny?
I was laughing because I was tired and at that point anything was funny. The damn cat weighs 15 pounds and has tiny feet, so it's really painful for her to stand on me. Definitely not tickling. Haha
all i have to dye is egyptian cotton.. can i with food coloring?
You can dye cotton with food coloring, but it doesn't stick well and it's not colorfast. The colors are murky and fade quickly.
Most craft stores have dyes for cotton, often in a 'dye your own tee shirt' kit. Those work well, aren't too toxic, and (if I remember right) don't require the heat like dyes for wool do.

My 16 lb cat will stand on my back while I'm sleeping if I try to sleep in past 6am. She's used to me getting up for work and feeding her at 6am, but I just quit my job. If the walking on my back doesn't work, she jumps from me to my husband and back again. If that doesn't work, she'll actually paw (sans claws) at my face - sort of a poke - until I give in.
I think my cat is training me, not the other way around.
The lace is beautiful. Love the color.
