'Tis the season.

Remember last year's bakefest? This year we aren't going to Ohio, so I will have VERY few people to give food away to. I figured, instead of cranking out twenty million cookies, I could look into doing some more labor intensive baking, instead.

I got out some of my cookbooks and started flipping through, with an eye to making some cakes and tarts and petits-fours, and like that. Maybe truffles.

Turns out there are all kinds of interesting things to make that are labor intensive.

Anyone ever made a boiled pudding before?

We made several when we lived in Cobham, Surrey, a suburb of London. (When in Rome, and all that...)We didn't really care too much for any of the recipes we tried...not big fruit cake fans here! But the best ones used Lyle's Golden Syrup and a high percentage of boiled fruit to breadcrumbs. If you're taking votes I pick truffles!

Where in Ohio? I am leaving next Thursday for a 27 hour train ride via Amtrak to spend the holidays in Cleveland. Can't wait peace, quiet and all the knitting I can manage.

I can't stop chuckling. Since you've decided not to torture yourself with the Christmas knitting, instead you're going to challenge yourself with the baking. It may not end in repetitive motion pain, but you may end up pulling your hair out over the decision in an entertaining fashion, of course).

I say go for it with the boiled pudding. If it doesn't turn out perfect, it should still taste good.

I also recommend trying Alton Brown's Free Range Fruitcake. It's always a hit with my family and I'm planning on making 2 of them this year.

I expect the flurry of Polish Christmas cooking to begin this weekend. Latkes and pierogis, yum!

Verification word is "hbriovbz", which sounds like something in the Polish cookbook index!

Only by accident:-)

As long as you can get the ambient temperature in your kitchen just over freezing before you start, you may survive the experiment... These days, UK winter temperatures don't necessarily support boiled pudding making!

oh this'll be fun to watch. I'm gearing up for some fun and labor intensive baking, too. I'll watch yours with interest.

Glad you're feeling well enough to consider intensice baking!

We, on the other hand, will be doing some serious cleaning out of house this weekend.

But I always bake our bread. Have for 10 years or so.
