Those fucking fucks.

Still alive. I've been off line most of the day, unable to log onto our home network because last night Miscrosoft updated my computer without permission and after the reset, the network wouldn't recognize my computer. I tried everything I could, but was left muttering great profanities (the least of them titles this post). Eventually the husbeast fixed it.

Otherwise, spent the late afternoon and early evening running errands. Took the Goob out to dinner at a casual diner she knows. We pulled into the parking lot and she announced "PANCAKES! My favorite!" We got inside. I asked her "Do you know what you want to eat?" She replied "PANCAKES!" I asked, "Do you want anything else with the pancakes?" "PANCAKES!!!" Everyone around us was laughing. So we got her pancakes. Two ladies stopped on the way out to tell us how 'darling' the Goob was, so it was a nice "Well, we can't be screwing up too badly" moment.

Oh, and I saw the endocrinologist. I don't (as in DO NOT) have chronic thyroiditis - the thing where your immune system attacks your thyroid. We're still not sure what's wrong with me, if anything. We're running more tests. But the doctor and his wife/nurse are AWESOME. Anyone ever needing an endocrinologist in Charleston, e-mail and I'll give you his name.

I still can't believe those motherfuckers updated my computer, WITHOUT TELLING ME, and fucked it all to hell. We need to go to the Microsoft home office in Seattle and start unplugging shit at random and see what THEY think of the whole idea. Fucking fuckers.

Ummm... There is a setting in the control panel that allows you to force updates to ask before installing. {ducking back under cover}

I think the same thing happened to my computer. I installed the update and now it runs sooooo slowly. But if I don't install them I'm afraid I'll get some stupid virus or something.

Turn off the automatic updates. (I'll hide behind Grilltech). I am having the same kind of problem with McAfee (security software). It updates and downloads what and when it wants. I turned off the auto update and it seemed to have helped. I'd chuck the whole thing but my daughter got me a good virus while I was unprotected. And I thought we'd had the "protection" talk.

I sympathize - my Norton will start updating itself while I'm doing something else, and half the time the computer will freeze so I have to shut the whole thing off. It's why I save everything compulsively - it happened several times while I was editing my sister's doctoral dissertation, and if I didn't save every page or so I would have lost an amount of work that would have made me cry.

And we never have ISP trouble except when they make us update their software, so now we're running a really old version, and have no connection troubles at all!

Good news on the thyroid thing; good luck with the tests; good job on the Goober.

Updates - yeah... We got a great message through at work that the automatic software updater had gone rogue and was actually removing software... yay.

Verification word: fruss. That really should be a word, halfway between fuss, frass and frustration...

thanks for the reminder of why i've never owned anything but a mac, and why i'm so happy to be retired and free of the evil empire's influence.

sure, there's the occasional attachment i can't read, but given how many of them contain viruses, that's not such a bad thing.

It is (and I will probably get stoned for this) the computer geeks who think that they can do whatever. AT my work, the TSS department upgraded our computers and moved files. Okay. But they didn't tell us that they moved files. They very nicely told us that our computers were upgraded but didn't bother to say "and, by the way if you are looking for documents and/or files and/or folders that were on the X drive, you should now look on the Y drive because we had to move them to do the upgrade." Fuckers.

We spent the last couple of days with no landline phone. Good thing we have wireless internet. When they finally fixed it, the tech out there in the 10 to 12 degree cold called each number to check, and told my husband it was a sheer-off at the big switchbox.

Verification is "toxinten", s'got something toxic in it.
