A whirl of gaiety.

I've mentioned before, here at the in-laws', that I prefer some of the long-term neighbors to some of the family members.

Well.

Last night, one of those preferred neighbors invited over a bunch of friends, had them bring their spinning wheels, and sit on the back deck and make yarn while the sun set. She invited me, 'cause she's just that nice. I went, 'cause I need to get the fuck out of the house more, AND I like that neighbor quite a lot.

Being self-taught (my lifetime's instruction consists of half an hour spent with this very neighbor, watching her spin and asking questions - it was so casual she'd be shocked to know I consider it a lesson), my first thought was "oh shoot, I'm gonna make an ass of myself". But I cowboyed up and hauled my wheel across the street and sat down to (I thought) look like a totally clueless beginner fumbling through her first bobbin of singles.

Long term readers may remember me saying that when I learned to knit, all by my lonesome and self-taught, that it was kind of cool because no one was there to tell me anything was hard. Apparently that applies to spinning, too.

I took along some Purple Trainwreck in case we were doing Show and Tell (I did sift through the skeins to find the nicest-looking one), and they passed it around. Comments varied from "ooooh, pretty, I love these colors" to "you did this with food coloring??!!?" to "holy CRAP, is that chain-plying?"

So I guess I'm not too bad at spinning. That'll teach me to be all neurotic. (But I'll do it again in similar situations, you just watch.)

Teeheehee.

Woo! Congratulations! You fooled them into thinking you knew what you were doing! Apparently by knowing what you were doing, of course.

Sounds like a lovely way to spend an evening - nice company and finding out you really know what you're doing.

I was going to take my wheel to a spin-in at the alpaca fest but didn't for just the reason you mentioned. Since I am self taught, I was afraid I would look stupid and find out that what I was doing was all wrong. Next time, I am going to boldly pick up the wheel and go. So what if I spin differently? I tend to do a lot of things differently (I'm a self taught knitter as well and as such, had not problem just picking up a pattern and following directions. No one to tell me what was hard, either. Not a bad way to learn.)

OMG-- you now know people who knit and spin? IN PERSON? Color me jealous!

Isn't it nice to find out you know more than you thought?

Glad you got an evening out to enjoy yourself!
