I recognize that kind of thing. (I spent four pages of notebook paper and a freshly-sharpened pencil working out a motif I didn't end up using.) Good luck!
I'm currently a stay at home mother, freelance writing on my off time, wondering how I became part of the ten thousand year old tradition of raising the kids while creating textiles.
I grew up in NE Ohio dairy country, married a sailor, lived in Hawaii ten years, lived in SC for five years, then moved back to culture shock and confusion.
Nothing but good times ahead.

hmmm...you're gonna have to explain that one!
You had to design over it because you didn't want to do the crocheted edging, right? C'mon... learn crochet...you'll rock at it...

That's me, hand-charting some written out directions for a lace edging. If I'd just do the crochet one I'd be set.
But I can't 'cause I want to turn this in for my state fair project and it's for KNITTING.
They don't have a 'I'm too grand to be classified as just one' category?
Know what I love about the internet? Downloadable graph paper. Graph paper you can generate to your own specifications.
We think of those as "general guidelines" rather than directions.
